Play Time

We've been letting puppies in a couple at a time lately as they've gotten so big and fast that all of them at once is a storm of destruction. Here is the black female that will be staying with us and the yellow female that is headed to Wisconsin.

"Martie" as she is usually called is five years old. She comes from a long line of terrific champion grouse hunting stock from Minnesota. Here in Alaska she is ever eager to chase after ptarmigan or grouse. And while I lived in northern Minnesota, Martie took easily to hunting and retrieving birds. She relishes the opportunity to learn any new task that keeps her close to me. She learned last winter to pull me on cross country skis (skijoring), we could routinely cover 12 to 15 miles in an outing. Anything that is close to water is sacred to her. We spend hours fishing, boating and playing around the rivers and lakes of Alaska (previously Minnesota). She is highly obedient, I haven't had to use a leash with her since we finished her training as a puppy.

At her last vet visit before the planned breeding she weighed 77 pounds and was in tip-top shape. I consider myself extremely lucky to have such a sound animal that has been so responsive to anything that I require. I do not hesitate to say of the dozens of dogs I have had in my life, hunting or companion, she has outshone them all. I trust her with our newborn baby and any of my nephews, as she can well play the roll of clown at the drop of a hat.

I have decided to breed her as she is what I believe a Labrador Retriever should be.

Labradors are one of the most popular breeds in the country (and increasingly the world) for good reason. They are highly intelligent, eager to please and exceptionally fond of being close to their people. This makes them great work animals and outstanding family members.

So when choosing this breed make sure to do the following:
- Only consider puppies from sound stock.
- Make the promise that you will devote the time necessary to proper puppy training.
- Decide that the animal will be with its "people" whenever possible.
- Do research into proper nutrition and respectable breeding practices.Save Changes
